Do you know your credit score? Not everyone does, and they are quite often unpleasantly surprised when they finally get around to it. There are often errors that can bring the number artificially down, possibly disqualifying you for credit you might need for a future “rainy day.” (source)
As a result, you might want to take advantage of your ability to check your credit for free. Each year, you have the opportunity to get complimentary credit reports from the three major credit bureaus, Experian, Equifax and TransUnion. This can be done at the website www.annualcreditreport.com. If you’re willing to spend $8.00, you can also get your credit score.
Do yourself a favor and thoroughly scour the reports. If you need to fix your credit report, if you find something that isn’t correct, you may file a dispute with the bureau(s) in question.
You start by going to that bureau’s website. Once there, you will need to provide them with the report number, and you typically have 30 days from the time you ordered the report to dispute something.
Once the ball is in the court of the bureau, they contact the reporting party (collection agency, lender or whoever it is) to check on the validity of the report. The bureau has up to 45 days to complete this process – and hopefully, the lending party will realize the error of their ways and eliminate it from their books. The best part about this is… if they are wrong, they have to report their mistake to all the bureaus through which they disseminate their data.
Should they not admit their error, the only recourse you have left is requesting a permanent narrative that will remain on your report, showing you have disputed the lender’s claim. This will help you in the future once you’re ready to apply for credit.
We should note that this can be a hassle; in fact, if your score is very high to begin with, it might not even be worth it. But if you just want the truth to be told (or you need those extra points on your score), consider proceeding.
